HERE and Mitsubishi Motors help drivers steer clear of traffic and distractions

Nokia_here_logo

Finland – HERE, a Nokia business, announced today that Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. has launched HERE Traffic including real-time information on traffic and weather, and is the first to offer updates on fuel prices delivered by HD Radio(TM)technology* for drivers in the U.S.

The service goes beyond the usual highway network, providing information on four times more roads than comparable products. By using HD technology, updates on real-time conditions delivered to the driver are ten times faster than the standard speed available in the market. Connected services from HERE provide a smarter, safer and more enjoyable driving experience every day through always up to date, real-time data, whether the driver is looking to avoid traffic jams and unsafe driving conditions due to weather or just looking for a gas station offering the best fuel prices.

The new offering will be available for the following Mitsubishi 2014 models: Lancer, Lancer Evolution, Lancer Sportback, Outlander, and Outlander Sport.

HERE Traffic can leverage a larger amount of rich location content, such as access to 100,000 gas stations in the U.S., than any other broadcast service on the market today by using HD technology, which has the bandwidth to transmit more data at a faster speed for Mitsubishi drivers. More than 330,000 miles of local roads now have real-time traffic information, and fresh weather updates are received every 30 seconds. All of this information is available through Mitsubishi Motors’ infotainment system and can be easily accessed by using the controls in the steering wheel or on the viewing touchscreen.

“We were the first company to support the launch of in-car navigation in Mitsubishi’s vehicles back in the late 1990s, and now we’re offering real-time traffic, weather updates and fuel prices in HD in North America. Mitsubishi car drivers are again among the first to take advantage of the latest technology development,” said Ogi Redzic, Vice President for Connected Driving at HERE. “Our expansion to HD emphasizes our deep commitment to improve the driver experience.”

“Our commitment to bring the most innovative technologies to our drivers continues to move forward at an aggressive pace, and offering real-time traffic, weather and fuel prices by HD from HERE is another natural next step,” said Bryan Arnett, Senior Manager of Product Planning, Mitsubishi Motors North America. “Mitsubishi owners will now experience a more enjoyable drive that will let them feel safer while driving on the road.”

“The success of connected car systems will derive directly from their ability to deliver a consumer proposition with timely and daily relevance,” said Roger C. Lanctot, associate director in the global automotive practice of Strategy Analytics. “Traffic and weather top the list of desired consumer content, and delivering more of that data faster via HD Radio connections is a market-changing offer.”

* HD Radio(TM) technology is a broadcast solution for real-time information. It includes a digital encoder which offers a higher bandwidth when compared to the standard RDS analog systems. This enables more than four times the amount of content to be transmitted. HD is able to increase the speed of distribution by ten times over RDS, which translates to 30 second incremental updates – faster than any other broadcast format available in the market today.

HERE partners with automakers and automotive suppliers to connect cars to the cloud

- Work begins with Mercedes-Benz to explore “smart maps” for self-driving car

- Partnerships with Magneti Marelli, Continental also unveiled

ESPOO, Finland – HERE, a Nokia business, today announced ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show that it has partnered with the Mercedes-Benz division of Daimler and two of the world’s leading automotive system integrators, Continental Corporation and Magneti Marelli. These partners are building on the HERE Connected Driving framework to offer individual connected products and services that go beyond navigation to meet their differing needs.

Connecting the car to the cloud is one of the biggest opportunities for the automotive industry today. Connectivity will allow cars to compute real time information on demand so that the vehicle can take over more aspects of driving ultimately creating an entirely new class of services. At the same time, technology is advancing so rapidly that what appears cutting edge today will be commonplace tomorrow. Automakers and system integrators alike need a partner who understands their needs, offers them flexibility and can stay ahead of fast moving technology cycles.

With a long history in supplying maps for the automotive industry, HERE is well positioned to help car makers and in-vehicle technology suppliers create connected cars.

Mercedes-Benz

HERE has teamed up with Mercedes-Benz to jointly develop smart maps for connected cars and ultimately, self-driving cars. HERE and Mercedes built a 3D digital map of the route that the first Benz Patent-Motorwagen took 125 years ago from Mannheim to Pforzheim, Germany. Based on the particular requirements of autonomous vehicles, this map includes precise road data that go beyond traditional maps, including the number and direction of lanes, traffic signs along the route and even exact coordinates of traffic lights. While autonomous vehicles may not hit the streets commercially for several years, automakers and tech innovators alike must already think about the infrastructure and technological requirements needed to support this technology. Mercedes-Benz and HERE will continue to explore this area together.

Magneti Marelli

Magneti Marelli is working with HERE to develop an end-to-end connected driving solution ready to use for car makers, based on Magneti Marelli’s open platform and the HERE Connected Driving offering. It takes advantage of dynamic content from the HERE Auto Cloud such as real-time traffic information, parking and fuel prices as well as information on local places.

Continental Corporation

Continental Corporation recently announced that it has implemented 3D content from HERE into its new Infotainment platform. With HERE, the platform will integrate different location based applications into cars such as 3D Landmarks, satellite imagery with split screen and current traffic information among other location based applications. Drivers can also synch navigation destinations and route preferences across the in-dash system in their vehicles and their smartphone, tablet, or PC.

“We believe that the evolution towards a connected car future will happen in different phases. Autonomous driving is just one fascinating aspect,” said Michael Halbherr, Head of HERE and EVP at Nokia. “Every car OEM, system integrator and every driver will require their own unique solution and technology will never be able to replace human understanding. That is why we have created our Connected Driving solutions with fresh maps at their core.”

The HERE Connected Driving offering will be demonstrated at the International Motor Show  starting on September 10 at Hall 4.1, Stand E30.

HERE connects the car to the cloud – introducing the most complete Connected Driving offer on the market

HERE_Auto_6

Espoo, Finland – HERE, a Nokia business, today announced a complete Connected Driving offer, the only end-to-end driving solution on the market today, which will help car makers and in-vehicle technology suppliers connect the car and the driver to the cloud.

The offering includes HERE Auto, HERE Auto Cloud, and HERE Auto Companion. In addition, HERE has radically improved its Traffic product, HERE Traffic, by building a new system to process data even faster and more accurately than before. The HERE Connected Driving offering will be demonstrated at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany starting on September 10.

Technology is rapidly transforming driving, with connectivity bringing the outside world to the car and the sensor revolution creating new possibilities for the automobile industry. People today demand that cars become integrated into their ecosystem of connected devices with the same level of innovation they see in their personal devices.

HERE Connected Driving offers a full range of automotive products and services that builds on our high-quality and fresh map to go beyond navigation. The customizable offering is a fully flexible framework that allows automakers to differentiate the driving experience. It will help them solve the problems that drivers face every day such as synching routes and other personal information across their car and devices and finding the right parking spot or closest gas station.

HERE Auto is the first embedded in-car navigation experience that delivers the right map at the right moment with and without a data connection. Drivers can get turn by turn voice guided navigation in 95 countries and 2D, 3D and satellite map views including street level imagery. In the future, car makers will be able to easily extend the HERE Auto experience using a software development kit (SDK) to create entertainment and other applications, such as in the areas of music and social networking. HERE Auto is already integrated in Continental’s next generation Open Infotainment Platform. HERE is also working with partners such as Magneti Marelli and others to bring HERE Auto to the market in the coming months.

HERE-Auto02

HERE Auto Cloud provides drivers with always-on access to several dynamic services such as real-time traffic updates, helping drivers avoid congested areas, road closures or blockages that occur en route. Drivers can also get recommendations on places to eat, parking spots, information on where to charge an electric vehicle or where to find the most inexpensive fuel.

HERE Auto Companion, a customizable mobile and web application, keeps drivers connected outside of the car allowing them to synchronize their favorite places and routes across their devices so that they won’t need to re-enter their route when they get in the driver’s seat. Car makers can tap assets from the existing HERE suite such as walking navigation, public transit routes and even indoor venue maps to build custom mobile applications. Drivers could use the app to remotely find their car with their device using LiveSight augmented reality technology and check the car’s vital stats such as fuel levels and tire pressure.

HERE Traffic has been radically improved by “Halo,” our new engine that processes data quickly and accurately. Every month we’re collecting ever greater numbers of high-quality data, such as probe points and sensor information to deliver real-time information such as weather, traffic congestion, road construction and other factors that affect a drive. With our new Traffic product drivers get improved travel time estimates, so they can better plan their routes and quickly re-route on the go.

“By 2016, the majority of consumers in mature markets will consider in-vehicle web-based data access a key criterion in their automotive purchase,” said Thilo Koslowski, VP of Automotive at Gartner. “Successful connected vehicle solutions will add value to the connected driver’s digital lifestyle and enable integrated cross-device experiences relevant for people everyday.”

HERE brings real-time traffic to Esri’s global platform

esri-logo

Espoo, Finland – HERE, a Nokia business, today announced that it is bringing its real-time traffic information to Esri, a market leader in Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping software used by enterprise and government fleet management companies around the world.

With HERE Traffic, Esri will enhance its web and cloud location platform with more precise location data for intelligent routing. Fleet operators will be able to better manage problems as they occur in real time, re-routing fleets when traffic unexpectedly hits, and providing alerts when pickup or delivery delays occur.

With congestion in the top 100 highway bottlenecks getting worse, real time traffic information helps fleets avoid traffic hotspots so that they get can get to their destinations faster and more safely.*

“For 10 years, Esri and HERE have had the shared goal of enhancing safety and increasing the efficiency of fleet operations by offering the most accurate transportation information on more roads than any other provider across the world,” said Chris Cappelli, Director of Sales at Esri. “Launching real-time traffic from HERE on Esri’s platform for our ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS for Transportation Analytics software products will offer a deeper level of logistic and analytic capabilities for enterprise and government fleet companies.”

Real-time traffic is one of the services that HERE delivers based on the data it gathers from a wealth of sources, including the world’s largest compilation of both commercial and consumer probe data, the world’s largest fixed proprietary sensor network, event-based data collected from government and commercial sources, and billions of historical traffic records.

“Dependable real-time traffic information is crucial to improving fleet operations strategy today and for the long-term,” said Roy Kolstad, Vice President for Mobile, Web and Enterprise in North America at HERE. “Our traffic offering will complement HERE map content, which Esri has been using for a decade. Through this combination of traffic and map content, Esri will be able to provide a richer location-based analytics offering that will help businesses make more informed decisions.”

The freshness of that data enables HERE Traffic to provide a more accurate picture of traffic conditions. HERE currently processes 20 billion real-time GPS probe points a month, with almost half of all the data less than 1 minute old and more than three-quarters less than 5 minutes old.

“Traffic data is the single most important telematics application,” said Roger C. Lanctot, Associate Director in the Global Automotive Practice for Strategy Analytics. “Whether for fleets or consumers, traffic data is essential to determining the fastest or most efficient route and HERE’s expanding relationships on the enterprise side are significant.  Traffic information is core to maximizing uptime and essential for alternative fuel vehicles such as EVs.”

ArcGIS Online, http://www.arcgis.com, and ArcGIS for Transport Analytics,http://esri.com/arcgis4transport, are two GIS products supported by Esri’s platform. The ease of accessing this powerful content will allow ArcGIS users to quickly embed traffic-aware routing into any application.

Nokia Maps vs Google Maps: offline experience

Using a mapping application offline is certainty one of the most requested features, when travelling internationally without a data plan or when travelling underground in the subway. This is something that Nokia Maps has been offering for years already and the benefit of which other players have just recently recognized.
So why do we still believe we are offering the best offline solution in the market? We compared Nokia Maps on a Nokia Lumia 920 with Google Maps on a Samsung Galaxy SIII to explain.
