New Nokia Lumia with PureView takes on “The Hurricane”

The next Nokia Lumia is coming and we are excited to unveil it soon. In the meantime, enjoy a preview of what’s in store.

We took the new Nokia Lumia to Adventureland in Farmingdale, New York and strapped it to the front row of a rollercoaster called “The Hurricane.” It’s 60ft high and has an inverted loop, so we thought we would capture some video footage alongside the Samsung Galaxy S III as well as the iPhone 5. Which phone takes better video on this shake-filled and low-lit ride? You decide.

André Meyer, a student and developer at MIT Innovation AG, talks about and demonstrates TouchMountain. This innovative application makes awesome use of augmented reality to help users identify the mountain peaks around them, and then get additional information on the peaks such as facts, weather, and even view nearby webcams. Created as part of a 12 week university project, André explains that the app benefited from input from Nokia and Microsoft as well as Nokia’s community of developers and users. Talking about augmented reality André says “the possibilities are endless, that’s the great thing about it.”

TouchMountain was the Technology Showcase winner in the Lumia Geek 8-Week Challenge.

Nokia plans to invest in imaging startup, Pelican Imaging

pi-camera

Nokia plans to invest in imaging startup, Pelican Imaging,  as part of its continuous search for new technologies to bring to their current customer base and to attract new customers, mainly from the iOS and Android arena. Nokia has been very active in the past in bringing new unheard of technologies to the masses. In 2002 Nokia launched the Nokia 7650 the world’s first camera cell phone, and Nokia kept on going and going, bringing us innovation after innovation up until the latest Nokia Lumia range with Qi (inductive power standard).

So Nokia has always kept its boldness in investing into new technologies, and with this strategy and dedication, I see their market share growing significantly in the future. especially with the Windows Phone Platform.

So what does Pelican Imaging bring to the table? Pelican Imaging has developed a revolutionary new array camera for mobile devices, providing depth at every pixel. Focus on any subject, change focus after you take the photo, capture linear measurements, scale and segment your images, all on any device.

Red Bull freerunning champion tests Nokia Lumia 920

What happens when you give freerunning World Champion Ryan Doyle and traceur (that’s the official title for a male parkour practitioner) Will Sutton a couple of Nokia Lumia 920s to play with? You get a great way to put the smartphone’s video capturing capabilities through its paces.

Twelve Nokia Lumia 920s, each filming from a different perspective, were used to create the action-packed video. For the aerial shots one of the smartphones was strapped on to a radio controlled Cinestar Octocopter (keep an eye out for it in the video). The rest of the video was filmed using a combination of handheld, chest and head cam mounted phones – each shooting in 1080p HD.

The result is clear. With the best low-light performance in a smartphone to date, and the added benefit of Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS), the Nokia Lumia 920 makes it easy to capture all the action – day or night. Find out more here: http://nokia.ly/10TU0Zn

Lumia App Lab # 12 – Testing Windows Phone apps with Remote Device Access

Testing Microsoft Windows Phone 8 apps on multiple Nokia Lumia smartphones is an expensive exercise in buying and maintaining several smartphones in your own testing lab — until now. We recently added a range of Nokia Lumia smartphones to our Remote Device Access (RDA) service. Now you can test your apps on multiple models, free of charge, any time of day or night.

In this training-lab webinar, we show you how to access RDA for free, outline its features, show you how to set up your computer, how to use the service, and review the limitations of the service.

If you want to give your apps a thorough testing across the range of Nokia Lumia smartphones before submitting them to the Windows Phone Store, RDA is just the ticket.

NFC in my life

NFC-Logo

With the introduction of the new Lumia range and the fact that NFC is part of the standard offering on most devices, Nokia have set a new standard in the way we do things. So what can NFC add to my life and how I can streamline my day to day activity with NFC. Think of NFC as a push button for a robotic task, lets say that while driving my car, I want to call my wife. The conventional way of doing this task is to go to either dial my wife’s number from my contacts of from my speed dial, in both cases i will be distracted, with NFC i can program an NFC sticker, place it on my dashboard and while I want to carry out this task I only have to point my Lumia 920 to the sticker and the phone will take care of the rest. Another example of how NFC can streamline my daily tasks is that before I go to bed i can have a pre-programmed NFC chip set my alarm, dim the screen and play my relax tunes.

NFC possibilities are endless and Nokia have recently released an app to facilitate the creating of NFC workflows and writing them to supported tags. Nokia NFC Writer.

Nokia also have a superb range of accessories that are NFC enabled like the Nokia Wireless Charging Car HolderJBL PowerUp Wireless Charging Speaker for NokiaNokia Luna Bluetooth Headset with Wireless ChargingJBL PlayUp Portable Wireless Speaker for Nokia.

The only wish i have as a Lumia 920 user is that it would have been great if Nokia included a couple of NFC tags in the Lumia package content to get us started with this amazing technology, however its not a big deal you can always buy a set of NFC tags for cheap for the following vendors. rapidnfc.comnfcdirect.co.uk and tagstand.com.

Tell us how do you use NFC and share your experience.
